Enrolment for Year 5
Dates and documents
Enrolment for all Munich schools takes place at the same time at the beginning of May. In terms of school organisation, it is to be distinguished from admission to a higher grade (6th grade and up).
In the run-up to enrolment, you will find more detailed information on the procedure, the necessary documents and a link to our parents' portal on the homepage.
Basic information on enrolment
Please note, that although enrolment of your child at the SAG enables to attend a Gymnasium, but does not guarantee admission specifically to our school!
Should the number of applicants exceed the number of places available, we will have to decide on the basis of the distance between the child's home and our school. The only exception is if a sibling attends SAG in the school year following enrolment.
We kindly ask you to refrain from submitting application letters in advance, in which you state subjectively important reasons for the admission of your child — we cannot take these into consideration!
We would like to point out, that in the interest of a trusting cooperation between school and parents — and also for reasons of fairness towards other applicants — we expect the address given to correspond to the actual place of residence.
School counselling for enrolment in special cases
If the following applies, please make a telephone appointment with the school counselling service at (0 89) 21 29 91-34 in advance of enrolement:
-
you suspect a reading-right-writing disorder or there is a corresponding expert report and/or
-
your child is from the 5th grade and/or
-
your child has to attend the trial class (for example, because he/she attends a state-approved school) and/or
-
you come from another (federal) state and/or
-
there is an inclusion or other diagnosis for your child.
Experience shows that it is helpful to clarify the specific issues involved on an individual basis. In all other cases, school counselling is not necessary!

School Counseling Service
For information on the German/Bavarian school system, the following counselling service offered by the city of Munich might be helpful:
The Gymnasium is one of several types of school in Bavaria and good German language skills are an important prerequisite for successful school attendance. If you have not already done so, please make sure to have information about other types of schools!
Knowledge of the German language
Success at grammar school depends to a large extent on language skills:
-
Lessons are taught in German at a level, pace of speech and degree of abstraction that increases with the grade. It is important to absorb the information accurately and to understand even details precisely.
The same applies to the comprehension of texts.
-
In examinations in particular, the use of written language is also crucial for success: fluency and variety in the choice of words, complexity of expression and, last but not least, linguistic accuracy.
We are aware that there is a tension here, especially for gifted children who are not native speakers: on the one hand, a stimulating learning environment naturally also offers opportunities for language acquisition. On the other hand, we experience time and time again that a too great distance between linguistic ability and demand creates a frustrating demotivation that seriously impairs learning success.
If your child does not have German language skills at least at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, we therefore strongly advise you to refrain from entering the Gymnasium directly! This is especially valid, when applying for upper classes.
Students from Ukraine
Refugee students can attend school and continue their education during their stay in Munich. We would like to point out that direct admission (as a guest student, see below) is only possible and sensible in certain cases.
Above all, a solid knowledge of German is indispensable for admission to the Gymnasium. Experience shows that these skills are not always sufficient, even if the student attended a grammar school with German lessons in Ukraine. To avoid frustration due to excessive demands, we recommend admission to a so-called »Brückenklasse«. Unfortunately, we are unable to set up such a class: the assignment is made by the state education authority.
Further information and a compilation of helpful links especially for Ukrainian students can be found on the websites of the City of Munich at www.muenchen.de (there: »Ukrainian families: school«), also in Ukrainian, or of the Bavarian State Ministry (»Bayerisches Staatsministeriums für Unterricht und Kultus«) at www.km.bayern.de.
International classes
Unfortunately, we are not able to offer any support regarding german language skills beyond the regular lessons. However, such support is available at schools with so-called »International Classes«, for example at the following schools:
An interesting alternative might also be admission to the so-called »InGym Programm«, a programme that is specifically aimed at high-achieving students who come from abroad:
Application as a guest student (»Gastschüler*in«)
The normal procedure for students who have had their habitual residence abroad for a longer period of time and did not attend a recognised German school there is to be accepted as a guest student (»Gastschüler*in«). During this time, the language skills are to be developed to such an extent that a successful attendance of classes is guaranteed. If the student is able to achieve sufficient grades, a decision about accepting him as a regular student can be made. Otherwise, an entrance examination (see below) is necessary.
After admission as regular student there is then a probationary period.
Please note, that this special relationship is different from just visiting our school for a short period of time as an exchange student!
Different branches and sequences of foreign language
We have a linguistic (SG) and a scientific-technological branch (NTG). When transferring from (for example) an economics grammar school (WSG), it may be necessary, depending on the grade, to catch up on the subjects that are specific to the new branch. Although a catch-up period can be agreed upon for this purpose, this catching-up is usually associated with considerable effort, especially since it has to take place parallel to regular lessons.
The same applies to a change in the sequence of foreign languages (for example, if your child started with Latin and English is the second foreign language).
In such a case, please consider choosing a Gymnasium that offers the previous branch (or foreign language sequence).
List: »Gymnasien in Munich«
You can find other grammar schools in Munich, among others, in the information collection (in german) of the municipal educational advisory service of the City of Munich.
»School catchment area«
The criterion of »proximity to the place of residence« for admission after enrollment (applies only to the 5th grade) results in the image of a »catchment area« from which we admit students. This is similar but must not be confused with the concept of a Sprengelschule for elementary and middle schools (there is no such concept at the Gymnasium): the distance from home only plays a role if more students enroll than we can accommodate.
Please understand that we cannot and will not specify the maximum distance to which an admission will be made. We understand very well that for many such an indication would be helpful. However, such a distance is always determined after the fact by the distance of the student living furthest away from us that we have been able to record.
This number depends on several factors over which we have no control: Number of enrolling students in total including the percentage of siblings and, of course, the specific addresses of the families. It is subject to significant fluctuations and it would not be serious to give a figure here.
Trial classes (»Probeunterricht«) and admission
There are two requirements to be considered when enrolling in the 5th grade: first, aptitude for high school education and second, distance of residence from the school. Both are examined independently of each other:
-
The allocation of a school place is made solely on the basis of the distance between the place of residence and the school, and independently of the (possibly necessary) passing of the trial lessons.
-
The actual admission (if no transfer certificate indicates suitability for the Gymnasium) is, of course, only possible after a successful trial lesson.
If we are able to admit your child due to the distance from home, we will reserve the corresponding school place until the result of the trial lesson has been determined. If, on the other hand, we are unable to admit your child (due to distance), even a successful trial lesson will not change this.
Entrance Examination
If your child is not transferring to us from a state-recognised grammar school (but, for example, from an approved public school such as a Montessori school), this usually means that admission requires passing an entrance examination (in the core subjects Mathematics, German, English, French/Latin, Physics and another foreign language or Chemistry) and a probationary period as well.
The entrance examination will probably take place in the last week of the holidays (beginning of September) and will test the annual material of the year preceding the year of admission in each subject. We will be happy to discuss the details, the exact dates and the possibilities of preparing for this examination when we can make a commitment for admission.
After passing the entrance examination, there is a probationary period.
For an orientation on the examination material, you can consult the curriculum of the Bavarian Gymnasium at www.lehrplanplus.bayern.de.
Introductory class (»Einführungsklasse«) for students with intermediate school leaving certificate
When changing from (for example the Realschule) to the Gymnasium, we would like to draw your attention to the so-called »Einführungsklasse«: this is a special 10th class (at the Gymnasium) for students who have a intermediate school leaving certificate and prepares them for entry into the upper school of the Gymnasium. This school path then leads to the Abitur in three years (G8) after completing the Realschule:
-
1 year introductory class
-
2 years qualification phase of the upper school (as a regular student).
The »Einführungsklasse« is available in two variants, depending on whether a second foreign language has already been examined for the intermediate school leaving certificate or not.
As a rule, the direct transfer to the Gymnasium is a considerable challenge despite good grades at the Realschule. We therefore recommend to finish the Realschule and graduate with the intermediate school leaving certificate.
The following Munich grammar schools offer this special 10th class in all probability:
Additional information can also be found on the pages of the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs (there under »Übertrittsvoraussetzungen Gymnasium«): www.km.bayern.de.
Admission to a higher year group
Requirements and organisational details for admission
Admission to the sixth or higher year group is only possible at the beginning of a new school year if there is free capacity and if there are no important reasons for not doing so. Please contact the school administration:
-
First submit a pre-registration by the end of the school year at the latest (see below). You will receive a confirmation of receipt.
-
If we are able to offer a place, we will inform you separately. Please do not submit any further documents until then.
Please expect that we will not be able to make an admission decision until the end of July / beginning of August, often during the summer holidays!
-
Please refrain from asking us about the status of your application! If you do not hear from us, we have not yet been able to make a decision.
Pre-registration
Please understand that we can only process your pre-application if you provide all the information and submit the documents:
-
A short covering letter to the school management, it is helpful to have a subject line of the type "Admission to (desired year group) ; (name of your child)". Please include the following information:
Full name and date of birth of your child
Name of the school currently attended, current year level
Indication of the foreign languages studied so far and their order of preference
Desired grade, if applicable, desired additional foreign languages or desired school branch
A contact number or e-mail-address, where we can reach you reliably, even during the holidays.
-
A current school report or a current performance report (copy).
-
A certificate of proficiency in German according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, if your child does not speak German as a native speaker (copy).
-
If you intend to enrol in the Upper School (»Qualifikationsphase«), please indicate your course choice.
You are welcome to do this by e-mail: please state your child's name and the year in which you are requesting admission in the subject line, for example
Application for admission: first name, surname ; year X
We strongly recommend that you contact other schools (please refer to the list referenced in our »FAQ«) in addition to applying to us for admission. If we have to turn you down, it is easier for you to have several options.
Procedure after pre-application
We will initially place your application on a waiting list. Please note that we can usually only decide on an admission at the end of the school year, often not until the summer holidays!
In some cases, questions regarding school career must be clarified before admission, for example in the case of
-
a change of foreign language sequence or school branch
-
admission from a school in another federal state or from abroad
-
admission from a state-approved school (»staatlich genehmigte Schule«)
-
admission from another type of school, such as a Realschule.
In such cases, please contact the school counselling service in advance!
